What’s this “house show” thing you keep talking about?

It’s exactly what it sounds like, a show in a house! Barns, basements, and bonus rooms are also included in the House Show title, pretty much anywhere works. It’s a concert without all the fancy lights and fog machines; instead, you can see the people you’re singing to, maybe eat a meal with them before, and hang out after the show as if you’re old friends reuniting. It’s magical. Sometimes there is a sound system, sometimes not. A lot of people want to do an outdoor show to make room for more people, but I think that defeats the intimacy, the quietness, and the distraction-free zone you can only really have indoors. Feel free to send pictures/ask questions and we can talk it through. It’s magical.

Do I need to have a big space to host?

Actually, no! Not at all. I’ve performed in all sorts of spaces. As long as we can fit my keyboard and your community, we should be totally fine. One of the special things about house shows is that it always feels full, which is honestly the artist and the listener’s dream.  If you wonder if your home could work for this, the answer is probably yes!! I’ve played in many basements, garages, and closet-sized living rooms and ALL of them provide a unique experience for everyone. It’s magical.

How many people do I need to bring?

Totally up to you! I’ve played a house show for 3 people and loved it, as well as 200 people and had a great time. Most do about 30.

How do I get people to come?

If you want me to promote it, I’m totally happy to do it from my end and (with your permission) post about it on my socials! But ultimately, it’s up to you to rally your community and bring the people into your space. Some hosts pay a flat-fee to avoid tickets, others rely on ticket sales, and others do a mix of both.

How much does it cost?

Valid question. Since we’re friends (you are hosting me, after all), I’m just gonna shoot you straight: when I do house shows, I normally ask about $50,000. Just kidding. It’s more like $1500 plus travel costs. This makes sense in order to a) pay an accompanist, b) play a 60-minute show, and c) pay rent. Of course I care more about making music and meeting new friends than the money, so I’m very flexible and willing to work with what’s financially possible for you. If you want to pay me more, please do - my bank account and I would be so grateful. If you have a lower price in mind, - we can negotiate (I’m bad at Monopoly so there’s a good chance I’ll give in).

Where will you stay, Skye?

Wow, thanks so much for asking. I would love to stay with you, as long as you’re not creepy. A hotel/Airbnb/guest home also works, as long as it has a couch/bed I can crash on and a shower. If I’m traveling with someone (which I normally do), we’ll obviously need two beds.

How far will you come?

I’ll go pretty much anywhere. I’ve done a show in Italy and a show two streets over. As long as the travel costs are covered and it makes sense logistically/financially, I’ll be at your house in no time.

I’m in! What’s next?!
